The Sword of Hades is the third short story written by Rick Riordan featuring characters from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. The events in the story take place between The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian. As with the main series, the story is narrated in the first-person by the main protagonist, Percy Jackson. It is the only short story not to have been released online prior to being published in a book.

Rick Riordan announced the release of the story on his blog on 8th August 2008. Initially the story was meant to be a limited-time UK exclusive before being released in North America, but it was actually published one month before the UK in the North American edition of The Demigod Files. The Sword of Hades was first published in the UK for World Book Day (4th March) 2009 back-to-back with Horrible Histories: Groovy Greeks by Terry Deary. It was later published again in the UK and movie tie-in editions of The Demigod Files.
